Follow these pointers to keep you heating system safe and in working order. Do you know where your stop cock is? Rather than look for it when there is water everywhere, have a look and find where it is. Examine that it is working correctly, and if not, take measures to amend this.

Be familiar with your heating and mainly your time switches and thermostats. Keep your house fairly warm and examine the pipes each morning to make sure nothing has frozen. Utilize the thermostat to keep the temperature level nice and comfy. If it’s freezing outside, set the heating to remain on continually, however turn the thermostat lower for the night.

If you have decided to go away in cold weather conditions, leave the heating on constantly with the thermostat set to low to stop your pipes freezing. If you have not got central heating, turn the water off at the stopcock and drain pipes of the cold water, prior to turning off the immersion heating.

More Heating Tips From Plumbers.

To not waste and your heating and to save money, you need to have the right temperature controls. There are many kinds of central heating systems, whether gas, LPG or oil-fired. In an ideal world, your full set of controls should include a thermostat for the boiler, a timer or some kind of programmer, a room thermostat and some thermostatic valves for the radiator (TRVs).There’s a different set up for electrical heating.

What is a hot water thermostat?

A hot water cylinder will make sure the heat supply from the boiler will be turned off once the water reaches a certain temperature if your hot water is stored in a cylinder. Turning the thermostat higher will not make the water heat up any faster, and the water heating will not come on if a time switch or programmer has switched it off.

What is a cylinder thermostat?

They are usually fitted between one quarter and one third of the way up the cylinder. They have temperature scales marked; you should set them at between 60 and 65 degrees. This is hot enough to kill harmful bacteria in the water, but it’s also hot enough to scald. For extra safety consider installing a thermostatic mixing valve which will automatically ensure that hot water is at a safe temperature.

Combi Boiler or Cylinder?

If you have a combi boiler then you won’t have a cylinder, but there will probably be a hot water thermostat on the boiler itself. This is often a dial with a picture of a tap on it.

What is boiler interlock?

This is not a control but a system of wiring that turns the boiler off when neither the room thermostat nor the cylinder thermostat needs it. Without this, the boiler can continue to what we call ‘cycle’ and this means it will waste energy.

What is a boiler thermostat?

Your boiler will usually have (minimum to maximum) a dial on it or it will be marked in numbers. This will allow the water temperature to be set and it will be pumped from the boiler through the radiators. The higher the temperature is set, the quicker it will heat your house. If it is not set high enough, this could mean that when it’s very cold outside, your home may not reach the desired temperature you want. However, condensing boilers work more efficiently when the water returning to the boiler is below 55 degrees, so it can be better not to set the temperature too high.

Some people have a regular boiler with a separate hot water cylinder. A boiler thermostat should always be set to a higher temperature than the cylinder thermostat! If not, this would mean the hot water cylinder will never get up to desired temperature. For those who have a combi boiler you will probably have two dials and one will have a radiator symbol and controls the output to the radiators. You can set this at the desired point for your heating without affecting or making a difference the hot water temperature.

Smart Heating Controls – The New Technology

Smart heating controls allow you to manage your heating controls remotely from a computer, tablet or smart phone, and many companies incorporate more advanced features to control your heating in more sophisticated ways. Some can store past information and keep track of your heating levels and make a decision for you based on your previous heating choices. Some will just use automation and optimisation features to help determine exactly when to turn on the heating for you.

The best part of having smart heating is that you can make changes from anywhere and if you change your plans for the day or have to work later than expected, you never need to worry about your heating. Some people would benefit from this especially if you are out working a lot or someone that doesn’t stay in a lot. If you are someone who rarely leaves the house or there is always someone at the property then this option may be useless to you.

There are many benefits to heating controls. Reducing your carbon dioxide emissions is a very important benefit which heating controls allow. Save money on your heating bills by installing and using your controls efficiently. Schedule your heating and hot water to go on and off when needed and eliminate heating waste. Select areas of your home to heat and set a required temperature for each room if needed, rather than heating the whole house at the same temperature, all at the same time. It’s easy to have this installed and you just need to contact your local plumbing and heating company to install it for you.

What are Room Thermostats?

These will prevent your house from getting any warmer than you feel necessary. They will allow you to turn the heating on until the room reaches the required temperature you have set, and then off until the temperature drops again. Room thermostats need a free flow of air to sense the temperature and surroundings. They must not be blocked by furniture or curtains, or put near any heat sources.

Typically between 18 and 21 degrees is the recommended room temperature. You don’t need to turn your thermostat up when the weather gets colder outside. Your house will heat up to the set temperature regardless. Sometimes it takes a little longer on colder days, so you might just want to set your heating to come on earlier in the winter time.

What is a Programmable Room Thermostat?

A programmable room thermostat combines time and temperature controls and allows you to set different temperatures for different times of the day. You can have different temperatures in individual rooms by installing thermostatic radiator valves on individual radiators.

What are Thermostatic Radiator Valves or TRVs?

Thermostatic radiator valves do not control the boiler but they reduce the flow of water through the radiator which they are fitted to when the temperature goes above a certain setting. Set them to the level you want for the room; a lower setting uses less energy and so will save you money. N.B It’s best not to use radiator covers as they will trick the radiator into thinking the room and surrounding area is hotter than it is.

All in all, smart heating is the way of the future for the tech saavy and the not so tech saavy. Life in the heating world has become a little easier for us all but unfortunately the price will undoubtedly remain on the expensive side!
